Kungwini, an hour’s drive northeast of Johannesburg International Airport, is primarily the base for our reddoctor project SHIC (Small Hospital Improvement Centre).
Technical and logistical support for local health centres
Similar to the well-established MIM project in Mbarara, Uganda, SHIC is a centre for the maintenance of small medical devices such as oxygen concentrators and anaesthetic gas vaporisers used in small bush clinics in the SADC region (Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa). By maintaining this very important and essential small equipment, we can provide content, technical and logistical support to dedicated staff in these small health centres.
The SHIC base is a good starting point for introducing this service in southern Africa and expanding it further in the coming years. This will enable us to make a small but concrete contribution to improving healthcare in southern Africa.
